If your next home project includes tile…

Listen. We are always ready and willing to cheer you on in your DIY endeavors.  We’ve even provided tips, tricks, and how-to’s in the past to several of our clients who haven’t been afraid to get their hands dirty.  But there are some projects that we will almost always warn you against rolling up your sleeves and getting to work.  Laying tile is one of those projects.

It usually goes without saying that there are professionals in a craft for a reason. But we know you go-getters out there think ‘if I just try hard enough, I can make this turn out.’ But here are a few things to consider before you dive in…

  • Tiles are breakable.  This is almost stupidly straightforward, but truly. They require the most careful of handling.  And not just in the picking up and putting down.  If  they’re not installed properly, you increase the chances of future breaks…as in, post installation.  And repairing that will be…really, really not fun.

  • Laying tile is going to involve cutting tile. Always.  Do you have the tool for that?  Are you ready to make so many cuts that you begin having dreams (read: nightmares) about making cuts?

  • What’s your experience with mortar?  Have you used it before?  Oh…first time?  You should really make sure you have the appropriate acetaminophen on hand.  Because… Head. Ache. Mortar is literally the glue that holds it all together.

  • Grout lines. We could let this one speak for itself. But we’re going to add our two cents…because we care about you. Without painstaking precision, it will absolutely—and unforgivably—prove you to be an amateur.  And mistakes can be missed initially. This will lead to tears.

The moral of this story: We most likely will not recommend you try laying tile at home. We will, however, recommend you contact us for your tile needs!

Your renovation will thank us!
